You Are Going To Buy Your First Flat Screen TV So What Is It To Be, Plasma or LCD?

It seems that everyone either has or wants to get the latest Flat Screen TV for their home. The decision has to be what sort of Flat Screen TV to get? Liquid Crystal Display (LCD), Plasma, TFT what do you go with and purchase?

Who would have thought from viewing those early images of shadowy wriggling fingers broadcast in 1925 in the earliest TV sets that television would eventually become the multi-dimensional, full colour systems that Liquid Crystal Display /Flat Screen TV provide today. Perhaps it is a rather sad indictment on our times to find that when asked about essential items, quite a few people will list their TV set.

So having established where and when television arrived in our daily lives, just what exactly is TV and how does it achieve the things that it does do if that is not too technical a description (joke)? Since its inception as an electromechanical system of receiving and broadcasting information the term television has become broadly synonymous with both the unit required to receive and play the information and also the technique and medium for broadcasting the data in the first place.

Like most forays into a technical arena nowadays it is very easy to get confused by the wide range of technical phrases and terminology in use within the industry today.

Rather than continue with a basic history of the industry, it might be best to stop and take a look at the latest developments within the industry mainly that of digital television, what digital television actually means, its formats, bandwidth and the technical terminology and jargon used today.

How would we define exactly what Digital TV is?

This is one of those areas where by and large ignorance rules and the wrong terms get used with amazing regularity such as LCD and Plasma both meaning the same thing when in fact they are similar yet different technologies.

The two main types of Flat Screen TV or screens available today are either Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) or Plasma. One of the major differences between the two technologies probably lies in the fact that with LCD TVs because the main technology used is TFT (Thin Film Transistor) by and large the screens are able to be much more energy efficient and potentially much smaller and more mobile.

Digital television is much more flexible and efficient than conventional analogue television and digital signals provide a much clearer picture, much better sound quality and a far greater choice and availability of programming.

So in basic terms, how does a Digital TV differ from a more conventional one? Let us look at this whilst analysing one of the newer LCD TVs available.

The LCD TV that we shall use for our illustrative purposes here is the B&O Beovision 7-40.

The following items of information have to be understood before you can make a proper valued judgement regarding your new Flat Screen TV?

The Screen resolution of the TV is possibly the most obvious place to start. In this case it refers to the number of distinct pixels in each dimension that can be displayed.

Next up is whether the TV is Hi-Definition Ready and what does this mean? Hi Definition TV essentially makes a TV picture in a quality format that is at least four times better than conventionally available at present.

We would need to look next at what types of connectors are used to connect the various peripherals that go to make the entire Digital Package work.

In this case we mean SCART Plugs and sockets and their usage. Here the definition of SCART refers to Syndicat francais des Constructeurs dAppareils Radio et Television (SCART).

The final item we would look at would be what is the nature and number of the High-Definition Multimedia Interfaces (HDMI) being used. The High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) is a licensable audio/video connector interface for transmitting uncompressed digital streams between digital audio/video sources such as set-top box, HD DVD Player etc.

The Beovision 7-40 is a 40in LCD TV and the prices for these would be in the region of 7470 pounds sterling or 15000 US dollars. The resolution of the screen is 1366 X 768 and with regards to being HD Ready the answer is yes. The Beovision has 3 (3 RGB) scarts and the type and number of Multimedia interfaces the Beovision 7-40 uses is DVI and 1. The type of Tuner for this TV is Analogue and Digital and the Beovision is available from specialised outlets only.

So how would we rate the B&O Beovision 7-40?

The most obvious place to start with as far as TV's are concerned would be the picture quality and our score here would be 10, next we would look at the sound quality and our view of this would be 10. Another useful aspect to review is the availability and number of relevant connections and our score here would be 8. With regards to the overall level of features, our view would be 8 if we then take a look at the ease of use and overall value for money then our scores would be, 6 and 6 respectively.

Finally our overall opinion would be the performance of this TV it has to be said is pretty fantastic but a similar performance can be had for a fraction of the price and therefore giving much greater value for money if you know where to look elsewhere.

Remember that all the prices we use in these reviews are very much designed for illustration purposes only and in some cases you may well find the actual price cheaper but also in some cases, more expensive.
